Dear Agnes
In association with its pre-launch programming, Remai Modern invited artists to realize original projects exclusively for online viewing. Through these commissions, the museum considered its website as an extension of its physical space and onsite program. Mobile and experimental, this online gallery allowed for direct, personal encounters with art while connecting artists and audiences across the globe.
From 2016-2020, the museum presented projects by: Ryan Gander, Tammi Campbell, Tanya Lukin Linklater, Thomas Hirschhorn, Taysir Batniji, Pedro Barateiro, Kara Uzleman, Rosa Barba, Amanda Beech, Ellen Moffat, Duane Linklater, Lynne Marsh, Raqs Media Collective, Ahlam Shibli, Ann Lislegaard, Anton Vidokly, Dave McKenzie, Laakkuluk Williamson-Bathory and Kelly Nipper.
An ongoing drawing project based on the work of Saskatchewan-born artist, Agnes Martin, one of the central figures in the history of abstract painting.
Tammi Campbell’s drawings and paintings deploy the formal vocabulary of modern painting to consider its legacies and mythologies.
Since 2010, she has methodically developed a series of drawings addressed to artist Agnes Martin. Each morning when Campbell arrives at her studio, she composes a “letter” to the artist. Echoing the compositional elements of vertical and horizontal lines that were characteristic of Martin’s work, the Dear Agnes series is comprised of hundreds of pencil grid drawings in seemingly endless permutations. Throughout July, visitors to the Remai Modern website will be able to watch Campbell’s series develop on a daily basis; each new drawing will be posted to the website as it is produced. The drawings are both homage to the artist and a record of the dedicated rhythms of artmaking and the rituals of the practice of art.
Tammi Campbell (b. 1974) lives and works in Saskatoon, Canada. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout Canada, including these venues: the MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina; the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Mercer Union, Toronto; and Galerie de l’UQAM, Montréal. Her work has been the subject of several feature articles in Canadian Art, Border Crossings and C Magazine, and is held in many public and private collections.
