Remai Modern announces new web commission by Kara Uzelman
Saskatoon, Canada — Remai Modern is very pleased to announce its latest web commission, Extra-Sensory Perception Experiment with the Grateful Dead, by renowned Canadian artist Kara Uzelman. The December 1-31 project is curated by Gregory Burke, Executive Director & CEO, and Sandra Guimarães, Director of Programs & Chief Curator at Remai Modern.
Uzelman’s commission, an audio recording with video, is an artistic fabrication. It was inspired by the contents of a closed archive concerning actual LSD research that was conducted in Saskatchewan during the 1950s and ‘60s. The work imagines the sounds and conversations of an ESP experiment between mind-altered audience members at a Grateful Dead concert and psychic- sensitive subjects asleep in dream-states at a research laboratory.
“We’re delighted to feature an original work by Kara Uzelman as our newest web commission,” said Burke. “Remai Modern is committed to working with artists in our province. We share a mutual interest and investment in the stories that have helped shape this unique region of Canada.”
“Uzelman works out of her home, an old farmhouse in rural Saskatchewan,” said Guimarães. “She uses this space and the surrounding objects as instruments in the creation of a speculative soundscape. Her imaginative engagement with archival material draws together the past and the present, of social histories and personal invention.”
About Kara Uzelman
Kara Uzelman (b. Vancouver 1978) lives and works in the small Saskatchewan town of Nokomis. Adopting an ethos of making as an emancipatory force, she engages with the processes of gathering, making and inventing as a kind of self-directed study of her surrounding environments. Her sculptures, collections and archives activate the narrative potential of objects and explore the immaterial qualities of the material world.
Since graduating from Emily Carr University in 2004, Uzelman has presented her sculpture and site-specific c installations in group and solo exhibitions including those at The Power Plant, Toronto; Le Commissariat, Paris; Temporäre Kunsthalle, Berlin; and Mercer Union, Toronto. She has participated in residencies at The Klondike Institute of Art, Dawson City; Triangle, Marseille, France; and Mains D’oeuvres, Paris.

In association with its pre-launch program, Remai Modern has been inviting artists to realize original projects exclusively for online viewing. On the first day of every month, work by a new artist appears on Remai Modern’s homepage. Past commissions may be seen in the online archive. Through these commissions, the museum considers its website as an extension of its physical space and onsite program. Mobile and experimental, this online gallery allows for direct, personal encounters with art while connecting artists and audiences across the globe.
