Remai Modern debuts new video work by Rosa Barba on its website
Saskatoon, Canada — Remai Modern is very pleased to announce the debut of Unprocessed in States (part 2) by renowned Berlin-based artist Rosa Barba. The new video piece is composed of footage gathered during the first phase of Barba’s web commission for Remai Modern. During the month of January, the artist placed a camera in both private and public locations throughout the city of Berlin and live-streamed video to Remai Modern’s homepage. Now the edited version of the project is available in the form of a 16-minute video capturing the month-long shoot.
Unprocessed in States (part 2) will be displayed on the museum’s homepage April 1-30, and will remain viewable thereafter through the web commission archive. Remai Modern web commissions are curated by Gregory Burke, Executive Director & CEO, and Sandra Guimarães, Director of Programs & Chief Curator.
“We are pleased to present this culmination of Rosa Barba’s recent web commission, Unprocessed in States,” said Burke. “This engaging work focuses on sites of transformation, where action, patterns and variation unfold at varied paces. Through its two-part presentation, this work explores experiential aspects of the Internet and new technologies, including voyeurism, boredom, acceleration and memory.”
“Barba makes us think differently about the concepts of space and time,” said Guimarães. “She portrays the intensity of particular moments that exist at the intersection of past and present. This poses questions about how different types of media contribute to the way we experience the world.”
About Rosa Barba
Rosa Barba (b. Sicily, 1972) lives and works in Berlin. She studied at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and is a PhD candidate in Fine Arts at the Malmö Art Academy. Barba has had residencies at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam; the Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas; Iaspis, Stockholm; and Artpace, San Antonio, among others.
Barba has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions at major museums throughout Europe and the US, and her work has been exhibited in numerous art biennials and triennials, including the 8th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art (2014); International Triennial of New Media Art, Beijing, China (2014); 19th Biennale of Sydney (2014); Performa, New York City (2013); International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia (2014); Liverpool Biennial (2010) and the 53rd and 56th Venice Biennales.
Barba’s films have been screened in many film festivals and institutions worldwide, including MoMA, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and Tate Modern, London. Her work has been widely published and is represented in many important international collections. In 2015, Rosa Barba was awarded the 46th International Prize for Contemporary Art by the Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco.
